Showdown - iPhone 8 vs Galaxy S8
Dave Pepper.

Samsung and Apple have this year launched the eighth version of their flagship phones with the iPhone 8 recently joining the Galaxy S8 in the market. iD has done the hard work for you and compared what we think are the most important features of both phones. Enjoy!
Body / Weight
The Galaxy S8 is generally bigger than the iPhone 8, but not by a lot. It comes in a whole 1cm longer, just over half a centimeter thicker and weighs 7g heavier (the weight of a Marshmellow apparantly). Both phones have an aluminium frame with glass front and back. If you drop either phone down the toilet you should be OK as long as it doesn't stay there for longer than 30 minutes.

Verdict - a tie
Screen / Display
This is where the Galaxy S8 dominates the iPhone 8. A 5.8" screen and a ratio of 83% screen to phone makes the iPhone 8 feel small. There is a lot of phone and a lot less screen on Apple's flagship (65% with a 4.7" screen). Both phones have 16m colours but it's the Galaxy 8 that gives you more space on which to view them
Verdict - Galaxy S8 takes the round
Battery / Talk time
It probably doesn't matter what type of battery each phone has, what's important is how long can you get between charges? With both phones now offering QI wireless charging (where's my IKEA table), the Galaxy S8 gives over 40% more talk tim with 20 hours over the iPhone 8's 14. If you want to jam with some tunes you get a full day and more of music playing with the Samsung (67 hours vs 40)!
Verdict - Galaxy S8 takes the round
Memory
If it's storage to save thousands of photos, videos, songs or Apps, the iPhone 8 comes in two variants, 64GB and 256GB, both with access to iCloud. The Galaxy S8 is 64GB but this can be expanded with an SD card via the external memory card slot.
Verdict - a tie
Camera
Both models fair well with updates to both the Primary (regular photo) and Secondary (selfie) cameras. The iPhone 8 has a 7MP secondary camera while the Galaxy 8 comes in at 8MP. Both phones have a 12MP primary camera.
Verdict - a tie
Other Features
Both phones have their own Mobile payment built in, with the aptly named Apple Pay and Samsung Pay available for use if your bank allows it. From a security perspective, both have a fingerprint scanner (Apple's on the front, Samsung's on the back) but Samsung also has an Iris scanner to allow for added security. The iPhone 8's Siri leads the way with the Galaxy 8's Bixby having some catching up to do for voice activation. One rather neat feature that Samsung has delivered is the DeX Station that lets you turn your mobile into a desktop.. at a price of course.
Verdict - a tie
Price
Both phones are available on iD Bill Pay. The Samsung Galaxy S8 is available from €200 upfront and €57 per month. The Apple iPhone 8 is available from €300 upfront and comes in at €51.50 per month, both with 30GB of 4G Data, 10,000 minutes and 10,000 texts on a 24 month contract.
Verdict - a tie
We love both phones, each one having its own specific pros and cons. We'll let you decide which one to go for!
Thanks,
iD
